Johnson, who plays second base, was the tournament’s Defensive MVP while White (pitcher), Lewis (leftfield), Cottle (first base) and Jernigan (shortstop) were named to the All-World Team. Joining them were Last Call All-World performers Mike Whitig (catcher) and Jeff Smith (third base), both of Tarboro.

Inner Banks Laughter - Pet Humor

Mrs. Broomfield's dishwasher quit working, so she called a repairman. He couldn't accommodate her with an evening appointment, and since she had to go to work the next day, she told him: "I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I'll mail you the check. By the way, don't worry about my Rottweiler. He won't bother you. But, whatever you do, do not under any circumstances talk to my parrot!"

When the repairman arrived at Mrs. Broomfield's apartment the next day, he discovered the biggest and meanest looking Rottweiler he had ever seen. But, just like she had said, the dog just lay there on the carpet, watching the repairman go about his business. However, the whole time he was there, the parrot drove him nuts with his incessant squawking and talking. Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled: "Shut up, you stupid bird!"

To which the parrot replied: "Get him, Brutus!

Carpenter’s Tools - Belief is all you need! . . . . .

By Pastor Wallace Phillips – September 23rd, 2006

A man was lost while driving through the country. As he tried to read his map, he accidentally drove off the edge of the road and into the ditch. Though he wasn’t injured, his car was stuck deep in the mud. So the man hopped out of the car and walked to a nearby farm to ask for help.

He found the farmer and asked for a hand getting his car out of the mud. The farmer replied, “Polly will get you out of that ditch!” He’s an old mule, but he can pull. The man looked at the old mule and then looked at the farmer who said it again….”Polly can get you out of that ditch!” The man figured he had nothing to lose. Then he and the farmer made their way back to his car along with Polly the mule.

The farmer hitched Polly to the car. With a snap of the reins he shouted…”Pull Fred! Pull Sally! Pull Ted! Pull Polly!” And the mule pulled the car out of the muddy ditch on to dry ground with very little effort.

The man was amazed. He thanked the farmer, patted the mule and then asked, “Why did you call all those other names before you called Polly’s?” The farmer grinned and said, “Old Polly is just about blind. As long as she feels she’s part of a team, she don’t mind pulling.”

How true that is. The Bible says that “two are better than one” and “a three-fold cord is not easily broken.” Are you a part of a team? Keep a team spirit and you will accomplish much in the kingdom of God, and in the relationships that He has for you to establish.

Carpenter’s Tools - Friendship . . . . .

By Pastor Wallace Phillips - September 14th, 2006

Today…I jumped in my vehicle and picked up a friend of mine; a colleague in the ministry. We rode. We talked. We shared. We vented. We remarked. We thanked. We laughed. We complained. We planned. We revisited. We smiled. We compared. We chuckled. We snacked. We allowed. We refreshed. We expressed. We rode. We talked. We shared. We vented. We remarked. We thanked. We laughed. We complained. We planned. We revisited. We smiled. We compared. We chuckled. We snacked. We allowed. We refreshed. We expressed. We rode….

Do you understand? You need friends. Here are a few remarks about friends –

“Friends are friends forever, if the Lord’s the Lord of them.” – Michael W. Smith

“A man who has many friends must show himself friendly.” – Solomon

“Friends are forever!” – Dr. Mark Muirhead

“There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” – Solomon (again)

“What a friend we have in Jesus…” – Joseph Scriven

“Joy….you’re my best friend.” -- Wallace Phillips

Today, make it your goal to find a friend. Ride….talk….share…vent…remark…etc.

Inner Banks Scenic Parkway
Well Received By Commissioners

Inner Banks Scenic Parkway

A group of Inner Banks citizens are so excited by this proposal that they are taking on the task of communication of the concept to all of the government entities affected. They are also forming a group of eco-tourism interested parties to take over promotion of the idea to the NCDOT and state government. This group is called the Inner Banks Scenic Parkway Task Force. So far they have presented their plan to Hertford County and Washington County last week, and yesterday presented to Gates County, Beaufort County and Bertie County Commissioners.

In all cases, the presentation was positively received. Everyone agrees this is a great idea and needs to move forward.

Carpenter’s Tools - All Dressed Up And . . . .

By Pastor Wallace Phillips - September 10th, 2006

You’ve heard it I’m quite sure - “All dressed up and no place to go”. That’s the title I’m using for my second book, scheduled to be available in February of 2007. It chronicles some headline stories of actual things that are keeping people from the house of the Lord today. Racial prejudice, socio-economic pressure, and even health issues keep people from an active and vibrant experience of corporate worship. They’re dressed in spirit, but lack the openness of the local church to be fulfilled in that awesome corporate design that God’s stamp of approval is upon. He said, “Forsake not the assembling of yourselves together…” in the Book of Hebrews.

Some are not welcome in the local gathering because of race. Some are not welcome in the worship setting because they don’t rate with the rest in the house in terms of finance. Others cannot find a place of worship that will minister to God’s special people who find themselves mentally challenged. They are dressed and ready to go, but can they find an open place of worship where their needs are met?

I’m concerned about the church at large today. She’s not the open institution that God wants her to be. We are open……. with conditions. Many churches snub their nose at folk because they are of another race. Many are turned away because they don’t meet the criteria of dress or presentation. Many would love to enter the church, but know the church cannot handle their physical or emotional condition.

All dressed up and no place to go…..it’s a book…..coming your way…..in Feb. ’07

Chowan University Convocation

Chowan University had a magnificent ceremony to launch their new name and status yesterday. They were blessed with magnificent weather for the event. The event was well publicized in the community and I arrived early because I wanted to spend some time on the campus talking with students. I was glad I did so. Even as early as I got there, the crowd was already impressive.

Walking In From The Parking Lot

Walking in from the parking lot I was surrounded by students and guests everywhere I looked. You didn't need anyone to direct you where to go. All you had to do was simply join the flow of people heading to the McDowell Columns Building, the imposing edifice that serves as the main building on the beautiful campus in Murfreesboro.

Arriving At The McDowell Columns Building, The Huge Crowd Was Early

There was a tent set up in front of the building for dignitaries to receive their credentials and get oriented. The organization of the event was clear. The officials were very helpful and everyone seemed to know the answers to any questions anyone had.

Dignitaries Receive Badges And Pick Up Program For The Day's Events

After getting copies of the program for the day, and great explanations about the rest of the multi day program, I went into the auditorium to get situated.

The Auditorium In The McDowell Columns Building Was Filled, Including Standing Room Only Along The Back Wall

The crowd was packed.

When the event started it flowed smoothly and was extremely well done, from the opening Processional led by the Chief Faculty Marshall and Mace Bearer, Dr. J Brabban. The invocation was by Mari Wiles, Minister to the University. Scripture Readings for this Baptist University were by Lynwood Grice and Burke Holland. Various introductions and greetings were offered by Danny Moore, Hope Williams, Suzanne Clifton, Preston McElheney III, Lynn Woodard Johnson (Mayor of Murfreesboro), Milton Hollifield Jr., Tara Lynn Bambary, Andrea Eason and Elaine Early Myers.

Faculty Leads Processional And Takes Their Assigned Seats

Music was provided at various points in the program by Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Stafford Smith, James Guthrie, George Warren, Don McAfee, Gregory Parker, Paula Presnell, Annie Elberton Abernathy, Jan Van Der Roost and the Chowan University Wind Ensemble.

Processional Ends With Dignataries On Stage

There was a special ceremony for the "University Citation for Meritorious Service" presented to Paul Camp Marks by University President Christopher White.

Hugh Vincent, Chair of the Chowan University Board of Trustees led the University Investiture with the University Litany, followed by the Prayer of Investiture by Minister Ronald McSwain of Earlys Baptist Church.

The Flag Ceremony did not complete the day's events. Next up in this multi day program for the University was the Community Carnival that followed lunch.

Inner Banks Laughter - Education Humor

A certain professor arrived late for a lecture to find a most uncomplimentary drawing of himself on the blackboard. Fuming, he asked the class joker in the front row, "Who, pray, was responsible for this atrocity?" The joker won tremendous prestige with his reply, "I really don't know, but I strongly suspect its parents."

Carpenter’s Tools - Heaven’s Reruns . . .

By Pastor Wallace Phillips - July 28th, 2006

I recently enjoyed the words of Dan Betzer who shared this thought-provoking story.

The other afternoon, I turned on the TV set to a Christian network and, to my surprise; saw my wife and myself being interviewed. My goodness, we did that program months and months ago and it was being replayed. I was quite taken back by it.

I got to thinking, God probably does not need or use video tape or DVD’s, but He keeps records. And when we stand before Him one day, there will be the instant replay.

When audio tape recorders first came out, a friend bought one and turned it on “record” one night when he had unsuspecting guests. One of the guests was very vocal in her condemnation of people in the church. My friend simply reached over behind the couch, rewound the tape, and turned it on play. The lady was chagrined to hear her own voice in such condemnation of another person. She begged my friend, “Please, let me buy that tape from you.” “Oh,” he said, “here...you can have it.” She took it eagerly and said, “Oh, I am so glad there is not another copy of that awful recording.” My friend replied, “Well, I certainly do not have another copy; however, there is one in eternity. God has it and I do not think He is going to give it to you.” That just ruined her night.

But, my friend, we will give an account for every idle word spoken on earth. Scripture puts it like this: “The books will be opened!” It was pretty shocking to see that old show on the TV the other night. I thought it had all been erased or destroyed. It is going to be more shocking when we see the reruns in Heaven.
